MOSCOW, June 18. / TASS /. Russia will fully withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty on December 18, 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. declaration Friday.
“Russia has notified all member states of its decision to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty six months after sending a notice. Therefore, this will happen on December 18, 2021,” the statement said.
Following the entry into force of the federal law “On the denunciation of the Open Skies Treaty by the Russian Federation” and in accordance with the established procedure, Moscow sent notices to Hungary and Canada as depositary States of the document and to the other Member States through embassies in the corresponding capitals, said the Foreign Ministry.
“A request has been sent to the Depositary States of the Open Skies Treaty to immediately inform all Member States of the corresponding notification and to convene as soon as possible provided for in the Treaty (i.e. in 30 days) a Conference of Member states to consider the consequences of Russia’s exit, ”the document read.
The situation with the Open Skies Treaty shows that attempts to secure unilateral advantages while ignoring Moscow’s interests and concerns have no prospect, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
“The history of the Open Skies Treaty allows us to draw at least two conclusions. First, attempts to gain unilateral advantages while ignoring Russian interests and concerns are doomed to failure. Second, the intention that the “technical supremacy” of the West will make it also possible to overtake and marginalize Russia, “the statement said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on Western partners to realize that they will not succeed in ensuring their security without taking into account the security interests of Russia and its allies.
“We will always find an effective answer. But it is even better to work together constructively to strengthen European and global security, relying in particular on the experience of fruitful cooperation between States over the years in the framework of the Open Skies Treaty, ”the statement said. .
Russia did everything to preserve the treaty and it is the United States that bears full responsibility for its collapse, the document says.
As the Russian Foreign Ministry has pointed out, the Americans are actively in favor of transparency in the military field “only in cases where they expect to derive certain benefits from it”.
“However, when it comes to opening-up measures concerning their own territory, they backtrack and start to create obstacles to the realization of these agreements, without thinking either of European security or of the concerns of their allies or to the assessment of their ability to honor the agreements, “statement said.
