IF the original Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle was considered a giant killer all those years ago, then the new Sportster S is a supreme predator, with this model delivering 90kW of power and 127Nm of torque thanks to its powertrain. Revolution Max.
Unveiled to the world overnight, the custom sports bike is designed to deliver a thrilling riding experience and ushers in a new era of sports performance for the 1250T V-Twin.
It is the second model to be equipped with this engine, after its debut earlier this year in the Pan America. That said, it will produce, in the Sportster S form, less power than the 112 kW offered by the brand’s off-road adventurer.
In this case, the 1250cc Revolution Max 1250T engine is tuned to produce huge torque at low revs, with a torque curve that remains flat throughout the power range.
To minimize the overall weight, the engine is integrated as a central part of the chassis. The result is a very rigid chassis with precise handling.
It’s also lighter than the Pan America, at around 30kg, at 228kg, and features a raised 2-in-1-into-2 exhaust designed to produce a pleasant low-frequency tone. It will be priced at $ 26,495 when it lands in November of this year (for the Vivid Black model).
“The Sportster S is the next all-new motorcycle built on the Revolution Max platform and sets a new performance standard for the Sportster lineup,” said Jochen Zeitz, CEO of Harley-Davidson.
“This is a next-generation Sportster defined by power, performance, technology and style. And that’s part of our commitment to introduce motorcycles that align with our strategy to increase appeal and carry on Harley-Davidson’s legacy. “
2022 Harley-Davidson Sportster S In profile, the Sportster S model appears crouching and powerful. The fuel tank and the rear part frame the engine as the predominant centerpiece of the motorcycle. The massive front tire is reminiscent of the fenderless front of a classic bobber.
The rear section, raised exhaust and slim solo seat are inspired by the Harley-Davidson XR750 flat tracker. Thick inverted forks and wide profile tires suggest a high performance sports bike.
“Every visual design element of the Sportster S is an expression of the raw power of the bike,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson vice president of style and design. “He’s a wolf in wolf disguise.”
The powertrain is highlighted with a Chocolate Satin finish on the lightweight magnesium engine cowls. Textures, colors, finishes and details have been selected to give the Sportster S the appearance of a custom show bike that just happens to be parked in the owner’s garage.
The Sportster S is equipped with a host of technologies designed to enhance the riding experience, including three pre-programmed and selectable ride modes (Sport, Road and Rain), which electronically control the performance characteristics of the motorcycle.
Two custom modes can be used to create a set of performance characteristics to meet your personal preferences or for special situations. Harley-Davidson’s Cornering Driver Safety Upgrade Pack is also available.
These are designed to improve rider confidence in unexpected or adverse road conditions, and to match the performance of the motorcycle with the traction available during acceleration, deceleration and braking, in a straight line or in a turn.
A 4.0-inch round TFT screen displays all instrumentation and supports infotainment generated by the Bluetooth-equipped mobile device and pilot’s headset, including music, incoming and outgoing calls and navigation provided through the Harley-Davidson app.
Full LED lighting features a Daymaker Signature LED headlamp designed to produce even light distribution, eliminating bothersome hot spots. The headlight has a distinctive capsule shape that adds style to the front.
Harley-Davidson’s latest model features premium fully adjustable front and rear suspension, in the form of SHOWA 43mm inverted cartridge forks and a SHOWA Piggyback reservoir rear shock.
The rear suspension features hydraulic preload adjustment using a convenient knob located on the left side of the motorcycle. The lightweight cast aluminum wheels with an offset five-spoke design are shod with Dunlop / Harley-Davidson Series GT503 tires.
The unique front brake features a new Brembo four-piston monobloc radial caliper and a 320mm diameter disc. The rear brake is a Brembo two-piston caliper and a 260mm diameter disc.
The forward foot controls and low handlebars put the Sportster S rider in an aggressive posture on the bike. The empty saddle height is 29.6 inches, low enough that most riders can put their feet up when stationary.
The brake and clutch levers are adjustable in reach, to best suit the size or preferences of the rider. The 2022 Harley-Davidson Sportster S will be available in three colors including Vivid Black, Stone Washed White Pearl and Midnight Crimson.
A range of accessories will be available from launch, including a centrally controlled conversion kit, passenger footrest kit, sundowner seat, windshield and saddle bag. For more information, please contact your local Harley-Davidson dealer.
