What is that?
Something only a brand like TVS Motor Company can possibly think of. This is the 2021 edition of the Apache RR 310 and the one you see here is specified with the optional kits that buyers can now purchase through the company’s new “Build To Order” initiative. Instead of offering upgrade kits that buyers are required to purchase after purchasing the bike, here one can specify the RR 310 according to their needs based on the options available.
The customization options are mainly split into two packages, the Dynamic Kit and the Race Kit. Under the Dynamic kit (priced at Rs 12,000) the main upgrade is the suspension setup. What you get are fully adjustable KYB inverted fork units up front and a single shock in the rear that can be adjusted for preload and damping (compression and rebound). The front comes with 20 clicks of damping and 15mm of preload, while the rear also comes with 20 clicks for damping and 10 steps for preload adjustment. Additionally, to withstand the harsh weather conditions that affect the life and operation of the final drive chain, a brass coated chain is part of the package providing longer chain life.
For the Race kit (priced at Rs 5,000) you get a revised driving triangle designed for more engaged ergonomics, perfect for the race track. The positioning of the clip-on bars is 8 degrees down and 5 degrees inwards, making it easier to turn and straighten. Next are the knurled racing footpegs which are 30mm higher than the stock configuration. While the knurling helps increase the level of grip between the ankle and the riding boot, the raised position combines with an additional 4.5 degree lean angle while also allowing the rider to better grip the tank when cornering.
Besides the above, through the BTO platform, buyers can opt for the Race Replica livery, a custom number on the visor, the color red for the alloy rims as well.
Who is it for ?
Those who want to get the most out of their bike. And also on the race track on weekends. For an asking price of Rs 2.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the 2021 edition of Apache RR 310 saw a price increase of Rs 5,000 compared to the previous model. However, the KTM RC 390 being its direct rival, it still exceeds the Austrian by a good margin of Rs 20,000, which is great. In contrast, the entire BTO kit, with all upgrades, comes to Rs 23,000, which makes it wiser to consider.
Does he manage?
Absolutely brilliant! The idea of having an adjustable suspension is to tune the bike to the preferences of the rider. As the event was held on a racetrack, we had three sets to take the bike out onto the track and test it. For the first game, the suspension was set to neutral settings to set a baseline. For the second set, the parameters were set for a more rigid configuration. While the neutral setting is already a substantial improvement over the non-adjustable settings offered in the standard RR 310, with the adjustments I was able to turn faster and hold a tighter line without any drama. Plus, the revised ergonomics had a huge impact on dodge in the straights and added room for even more bank angles.
For the third and final set, with some minor changes to the suspension based on my feedback from the previous set, I was even faster than before and able to attack the corners even better. I was able to get an idea of the difference it makes when the RR 310 has been configured to my needs. Not only has it made you faster, but it also builds the confidence to go further towards the capabilities of the bike.
How fast is it?
The RR 310 is already a fast motorcycle. With a claimed top speed of 160 km / h, it does this without any difficulty. On the track, in the straights, I managed to cross the 150 km / h mark but only to grab a handful of brakes and shift a gear or two before turning into the corners.
The Apache RR310 comes with four drive modes, Urban, Rain, Sport and Track. As this was a track event, the full potential of the 312cc reverse-incline engine was available with reduced interference from the ABS. You can even record the race telemetry to analyze once back in the pits.
Is it fun?
Cared supersport motorcycles are designed for performance and less for comfort. If that’s what you’re looking for, the Apache RR 310 is a fantastic bike to choose from. And with the Build To Order platform, we don’t have to ask for anything more in return. With the kit, the RR 310 transforms into a thoroughbred track machine capable of chasing summit after summit in the quest for the fastest lap time, giving all track junkies pure motorcycle nirvana.
